Our discussion in my class group facebook

Questions for the coming meeting
1. What does it mean to know a language?
2. How do you define language?
3. Which theory of language do you believe and how do you see it from the religion point of view
Q1. To know a language is to be able “to do” something in language
(June K. Phillips). It means we are not only know about language,
even we must
learn it deeply. Or in our daily activity, we can use language for
comunication. it
means we know the language. We speak in Banjarese, we know
banjarese. but, if we
only know just a litle beat about japanese, we don't know
japanese (Example).
Q2. Language is very important for comunication. off course. it's a
device to comunicate
each other. Lnguage is part of our environment, and we have
words about most things
in our environment (Paul Kay ; Cultural Models in Language &
Thought).
Q3. I Agreed with The Ding-Dong Theory. Favored by Plato and
Pythagoras, maintains
that speech arose in response to the essential qualities of objects
in the environment.
The original sounds people made were supposedly in harmony with
the world around
them.(Http://grammar.about.com/od/grammarfaq/a/Where-Does-
Language-Come-
From.html) from the religion point of view, based on our Holy
Book - al-Qur'an - surah
al- Baqarah, ayah 31. The poin is Allah taught Prophet Adam As. told
anything name in the world. like animals, plants, water, air, angels,
demons, earth, soil, mountains, etc.

Ahmad firdaus's answer

‎1. To know a language is to study more effectively the good compositions about a language system so its use can stand to reason and we will reach right points. Besides we have to know more deeply that every language in this world has its own uniqueness.
2. Language is main media which human and animals use for interaction needs. Its forms are both verbal (sounds) and non-verbal (gestures). Also language has agreements between its speakers since it sometimes sounds arbitrary, so that they can know each other with some typical styles.
3. I’m interested in a theory saying that language is to develop human cultures. From the religion point, I refer to Quran which was created by Allah through His Messenger. Its verses are arranged with the beautiful structures (nahwu and sharaf) to show its power as a Holy Book and as a good guidance for mankind, and we are expected to learn it more analytically. It means that language is very important for our life necessity more than just communication.

Hairul Rahman'answer.
